Problem with dark-colored lead heads

Today I received some new 1/8 oz. heads from a different supplier than I normally use.
The jig heads are beautiful, nice and round, clean... but the lead is a very dark color, not like
the bright shiny lead I have been using. Started coating a few in the powders, and it didn't
seem to be an issue until I got to the "see-through" colors like Candy Orange and Candy Yellow.
They were coming out a cloudy dull version of what they are supposed to be.
I immediately coated a few more with the shiny heads, and there is a world of difference.
The dark lead does not seem to be an issue with solid colors.

Anyone else ever run into this problem?

I always use either nickel plated heads or gold plated heads then I put candy colors over them.
but you can do the following you could use either a white or silver or gold or pearl white for a base coat then put your candy colors over it give it a shot.

Dip the heads in vinagar and wipe off, should take care of it.

That's normal for lead. After awhile it turns a dark gray color from oxidation unless you clear coat it.

The lead oxidation will be more pronounced on pure lead. They must have been sitting around for a while. Back in the day when we could still get it we would use Line-o-type lead that stuff never oxidized. Bad part about using it was that every thing you poured was light in weight. I would clean it as per Fatman post and then use as you wish. Yes you will have trouble if you want a see though color. Even it you use a base coat it will still have a off look.

I soaked a couple of them in vinegar for about 30 minutes... lightened them up a little, but
not enough to really make a difference.

I am just going to reserve these heads for darker colors like Black and Purple, and will order
new ones in the bright finish for everything else.

To bad you don't pour your own. Any more I don't pour more than I can tie at one time. 8 to 15 I can pour,clip, and Paint them while I am waiting for the dryer to dry clothes. Unless you use very few it wouldn't pay you to get a mold. If you use as many (more like loose) as many as I do I have paid for my molds many times over.

As they are telling you, the. Andy colors should never go over a dark head, other colors are fine, but not Candy. I like Candy best over plated heads, but you can also out it over a silver head so paint the heads first with silver or even better some good Chrome.

also cure the silver of Chrome first before painting with Candy.
