If you are drifting or having a hard time holding your position then certainly. A marker is easy enough to deploy and retrieve to not utilize if you think you need it.
I mark if I have trouble staying on, but good idea cause you know right where fish are holding after catching one look where bouy is in relation to your catch.
A bouy is key when ever you fish open water. Keeps you orientated to surrounding brush and where fish are feeding in relationship to the bouy. USE A BOUY!!!. Crappie fishing 101
Yes there is almost always a marker laying out with in reach, explicitly if I'm scouting I can toss it to a spot that looks like it had fish on the graph. GPS is great but some old school mixed in can help a lot.

I know enough about fishing to answer with an "aye" to bouys too. I don't jig deep water too much. But, I do spider over deep brush this time of year. I like to have my brush between me and the bouy while I am on the down wind side.
