Howdy folks. I searched the Arkansas forum and couldn't find a topic on this one, so I decided to make one. Any thoughts on what the best thermometers are? I've had bad luck with a few different types, and quickly realized that knowing your temp makes a BIG difference on final product. I am looking for something that is tough and works well. Just wanted to see what you all use.

Thanks RCC. I'd like to get one but just don't fry enough to justify it. Come on, I know RCC isn't the only one that fries fish!
I seldom use one just test temp with a piece of fish and don't let grease get too hot . But that comes from experience. Academy sells some with long stem that will work.
Until I just recently bought a Cajun Fryer, I did not use a thermometer either. I always watched my oil and tested with a pinch of meal.
I don't fry many fish either, but the expense of the fryer is worth it. I'll never have to buy another fish fryer. (that's the way I justified buying mine! LOL)
I have cooked on Cajun Fryers before. But, I don't own one. Except for the noise, they are hard to beat. Jerry Blake beleaves in a candy thermometer. But, my PawPa taught me to test with a pinch of meal as well.
I have scortched lots of grease trying to use a thermometer. I don't even try no more. Matter of fact, I usually start turning my heat down once I have it swirling. I also watch for smoke coming off of the grease. There is a difference between smoke and steam. So, beware.

Well I always get in to big of a hurry and usually am trying to do to many things at one time. Therefore I bought a couple thermometers at Bed Bath and Beyond....i usually run two cookers.....one for hushpuppies and one for fish....they cost about $10 each...they are about 9 inches long and 2 inches wide....have a clip on the back to hold on the cooker so you can keep the bottom of the thermometer off the bottom of the cooker.....big numbers and a wide line of red to see.
I prefer the infrared thermo and they make a great christmas gift for around $50 and have more than one use. My grandad broke a glass thermo in the feesh one time years ago and we had to throw most of it out so thats not an option anymore for me.
If you don't cook very often or aren't feeding a bunch of people one of the small electric fryers are hard to beat and thermometer is built in. Its kinda fool proof but the key is don't cook more than about six fillets at a time.
Before I bought my Cajun Fryer I used this one Eastman Outdoors 38200 12-Inch AccuZone Deep Fry Thermometer now my pots were deep so I needed a long probe, you may not need one that long, but measure the depth of your pot first before ordering one, and you need to know how far up the pot your grease goes too. I bought mine off of Amazon.com and got free shipping because I bought 2 at the same time. Be sure and read reviews, I did before I bought mine and was surprised at what I learned. Like how deep the oil has to be before it would register correctly and how to calibrate it correctly, ect.
