I use a 1/4 ounce sinker on the bottom with two hooks above it tied on with Palomar knots. One hook for fishing woody areas. If I know the fish are right on the bottom first hook is only 6 inches above the sinker. If I am not sure or the fish are spread out I separate the sinker and hooks about 18 inches each. The sinkers I like are all lead bell sinkers with the eye molded in. The bell sinkers with metal eyes snag easier. You can go heavier if you are going to be moving about, but usually when I am fishing deep I am just parked over a spot and 1/4 ounce is about right.
I can't believe that someone didn't say hooked through the lips or eyes. Lol. I will add this though if you want more action from your minnow hook him or her which ever it may be upside down to give em more fighting movement. Lil buggers will fight like crazy to get upright again.......Ranger
I've been using crappie rigs for all my life and have always had good luck with them.
