I hate those CD manuals supplied with products. Just moved from 798 to 998 and can someone explain the 455 and 800 settings to me. Trying to find out when one should be used instead of the other. Thanks, Ron

Yea,the cd does suc.....under the sonar menu is were you change from 800 to 455.Imo the 455 is really all that's needed for most peoples fishing needs but the 800 will give a sharper picture at the sacrifice of range.the 455 will also produce better results from a soft bottom. From any page push menu/menu/sonar/800/455.just as well set your switchfire settings while your there.

Here are pix of the same structure using the 455 vs the 800..(all settings and enviromental conditions were identical except for frequency choice)...

The 455kHz beams cover a full 180° from the water's surface to "overlapping" a bit under the xducer..
The 800kHz beams cover 130° ...

The 455 will allow the image to be viewed all the way to the outer edges of the display ... But the overage image will be fuzzier...
The 800 will be darker out to the sides of the display...But will have better detailed definition of the area closer to the boat ...
The 455 is good for seeing (and marking) structure/suspended fish out to the sides...(because the image will be brighter out to the edge of the display)...
The 800 is good for repositioning the boat closer to the structure to see the targets in better detail...

You can download the product manual here 998c HD SI Combo :: Humminbird
It will be in a PDF format that you can jump from page to page and zoom in to make it larger.
I will take my laptop out to the boat while doing things with the manual up for reference help.
