New exisetax on fishing gear

Have you heard about this. Cabela's spilled the beans on obamacare.
On 1 Jan 2013 the “Affordable Care Act” takes effect – remember it was enacted 23 March 2010 – and those famous words from Nasty Pelosi – “you have to pass it to find out what is in it”. If you think we aren't getting hosed.....you haven't seen anything yet….. I'm sure hunting and fishing enthusiasts will love this!

“The 2.3% Medical Excise Tax that began on January 1st is supposed to be ‘hidden’ from the consumer, but it’s been brought to the public’s attention by hunting and fishing store Cabela’s who have refused to hide it and are showing it as a separate line item tax on their receipts,”.

Manufacturers Taxes
The following discussion of manufacturers taxes applies to the tax on:

Sport fishing equipment:
- Fishing rods and fishing poles =10%
- Electric outboard motors = 3%
- Fishing tackle boxes = 3%
Other:
- Bows, quivers, broadheads, and points = 11%
- Arrow shafts = 11%
- Taxable tires = $.0945 per each 10 pounds of the maximum rated load capacity over 3,500 pounds.
- Gas guzzler automobiles = 10%

Heading correction should read "EXCISE TAX"

Those taxes have been around since the 50's.

Greetings all, Spin this any way you want but if you go to the actual IRS website and look up Publication 510 you will see all the new taxes that we are paying to pay for obamacare. Whether we pay it directly or indirectly, through a tax that the manufacturer has to pay, we are still paying it. Remember the old saying "#$%^ (crap) always rolls downhill?" This is living proof. We are being taxed into the poor house.

Thanks for the Snopes explanation. Cabela's is either dumb as a stump, or they're trying to rip us off and cause trouble for Obamacare at the same time. Their fake excise tax charges only happened on one day before they had to back off and blame it on "a glitch in the system".

I understand everybody likes Snopes but has anyone actually gone to the IRS website and read the paragraph? Link below.

Called the "Pitman Roberts" act and the "Headly" Act.

Fred Bear was instrumental in getting congress to pass the bill that would take a percentage of archery equipment (then just bows) and have it set aside and made available for wildlife restoration and the creation of ranges within the State. He sent Mr. Dick Lattimer (Fred's photographer, media guy, and consider his unofficial son) to congrass to act on his behalf. Later, it was moved to other equipment (arrows, quivers, broadheads, and so on).
Interestingly, the same money set aside in the mid to late 80's for the usage of range construction had, to that point, never been utilized to construct any range within the state of Michigan.

I assume that some "idiot" didn't understand what they were reading, and jumped the guy. Congress has established a "medical devices" tax, similar to Headly or pitman roberts. This monies is specifically earmarked for certain things only.

Do you want to know why a Michigan "Combo" license is actually SOLD and rung up as TWO seperate licenses? Simply put, if the "combo" tag was sold as one price ($30.00) the state would only be eligable for taxes available from pitman roberts in the amount of one Tag... by selling the combo as "two tags" they get the monies twice.....

Ever wonder why the state of Michigan requested that parents with children who fished, purchase a "voluntary" Participation License for a fee under $5.00? Go guessed it. So they could claim monies from the Headly act with gives "fishing excise tax monies" for licenses sold.... Pretty smart shell game if you ask me.
