buggs island
I am from central Pa. and would like info on buggs island. Would like to come down 3rd or 4th week Sept. You pick for me longwood park or rudds to camp. Will be camping out of back of truck with camper top. Probably won't be able to get out on main lake due to boat size. What are normal temps. at this time and how would crappie fishing be. Wife and myself both pushing 70 so need easy access. Looking at 5 days of fishing. Are docks available or do you pull up on bank. Thank You

Docks are at both Longwood and Rudds. As far as temps its anyones guess with the crazy weather we have been having. Just guessing I would say some where between warm and hot. Sorry I can't be more help.

First off be prepared for a afternoon storm, don't ask me why but in the 20-25 times I've tent camped there I always get stormed on at least one of the two nights.
Don't be afraid to trailer the boat and try different creeks... If you launch at occonechee you can fish the main lake double set of bridges, you will catch crappie there mid to late summer, maybe not any 2 lbers but enough 9-10 inchers to fry. Also good catfishing I like lighted bobbers and chicken livers. Oh and the craps on the bridges fish around 8-10 ft deep. An go check out bobcats bait and tackle on rt 15 best tackle shop I've ever been in! He sells nice contour maps as well.
I hope more chimes in that knows more about Kerr fishing,,, should be a good vacation for y'all

I've camped at Longwood and Rudd's, and usually go down there from PA twice a year. Didn't make it this spring though. Will probably be there in Oct. Depending on your site, you can pull right up to the bank at your campsite. Actually even if you don't have a waterfront site, you can still find a place to pull up on the bank. You wouldn't have electric available though if you needed it for charging your batteries. Rudd's has a boat ramp in the campground, but there is no parking, so you have to take the truck and trailer back to your campsite. Both Longwood and Rudd's do have ramps with parking just outside the campground gates. My wife has MS, so I find it easier to keep the boat on the trailer and just use the ramps with docks. Sometimes the banks can be steep and slick to get down to your boat. There's plenty of water to fish without venturing out on a big portion of the lake, so a small boat should be fine. Late Sept or early Oct can be warm during the day, but comfortable sleeping at night. Give me a shout if you need more info.

Northbend has parking at their ramp but is kinda sketchy for a small boat, it's on the main lake close to the dam... I have had a bad experience there with a 14' Jon and a 9.9 ,,, w sw winds are a pain. On the bright side no Mosquitos lol

crappie will still be in their summer patterns then. If the lake level is down 5-6ft, I do best upstream of the bridges at Clarksville, close to where the two rivers enter the lake. If the level is closer to normal, Butchers or Longwood should be good for eatin sized fish. for a chance at larger crappie, I'd look for brush on the main lake in 25-30fow that topped out at 15-20ft. vertical jiggin would prolly work best. watch this forum closer to that time for more current reports.
