questions about crappie brush

I'm beginning to see the bigger the piles the better but I've heard several small piles are the way to go also??? It's been said the smaller the piles the bigger the fish?? I know once you go over brush you've put in sometimes it looks a whole lot smaller than when you sank it. I like cane but don't like the lasting effect of it. It's been said also that say 3 months later cane will loose all leaves and won't be effective anymore?? I still manage to catch fish off cane without leaves though. I may try a little of both this next winter, several small piles along slick banks and in other places put in whole trees.

Skeeter , I have some Bamboo tops sank nearly 10 years, nothing but bucket and poles but still holds some fish.

Well I'd think even though the leaves fall off quick the stalks of cane, better yet Bamboo, would offer post type cover like stakes for a long time too as you said here.

I don't have access to the "bamboo" but I do sink tops in some of the lakes I fish. I use willows. The leaves get off of them quickly and they only last 2-3 years, but those dudes produce well. There is also an endless supply of willow where I live so that's the main reason I use it.

I take the leaves off before I sink them. That way I can troll right through the middle of them.My biggest problem is not rotting its the river getting up and washing them away.

X2. I hate that when I get a good top going!!!

Well I've learned not to put them along the river channel for that reason there. If you do you have to tie them with a big rope and use a lotta weight, sometimes that don't even work. Then there's the tie a plastic coke bottle in the top of the top with the weight on the bottom in hopes of it floating the structure up off bottom where it's standing up.....I don't know if that works or not, i've tried it but not real sure if it's standing or not.
