Just wondering what material provides the best solution for trolling motor batteries (tray). One is made from nylon and the other is made from polyurethane. both have stainless steel posts and crossbars. Probably the hardest thing on them will be the sun. Not sure which material will stand up to the elements. Thoughts and experiences?????
I would think the Nylon would stand up better than plastic. Some of the things made with nylon is reinforced with fiberglass strands for strength.
Best bet would be to google the type of material. Some stand up very well while others break down at various rates.
Not sure which is best but you can make either one better. Since it is ultraviolet light that causes the breakdown why not just paint the tray to keep the light off of it? Every few years you can repaint it. I woud be willing to bet just about any spray paint would work.
Seems that the polyurethane may be more UV resistant...

You all make valid points..thing is you just don't know what the manufacturer has done. Sometimes its all about $, cutting corners to offer something cheaper. Not trying to be anal about this...just don't want to buy something and wish I bought something else 2 years from now. Willing to pay a premium if it is more durable.

Basscat makes some aluminum trays that will last forever but they are pricy. You could buy a lot of the cheap plastic trays for the price of the aluminum trays.

Which ever you choose, try this: Take a sharp knife or razor blade and cut off a small sliver of the material and light it with a match. Some of them will burn like crazy. I had a boat burn up when I had a dead short somewhere in the factory 24V trolling motor wiring and the one thing my extinguishers wouldn't put out was those dern battery boxes.
