Are you putting down a good thread base all the way from the head to the hook-point" if so then sounds you're not holding the material tight enough against the hook till it is secured with several tight wraps. Once the tail is tied in, if tightly enough, it shouldn't move, no glue necessary. I use a little glue with hair but haven't needed it with feathers.
It happens mostly with maribou
if you put thread base on most of the shank before the bend and tie in your marabou first all the way to where the henille will end (pretty tight) then once you have it where you want it grab it with your fingers at the thread and wrap tight again back to the head. Once you have got to tgis point it should not move again. Then tie in your chenille and it's done and that is the only time I put a drop of my glue that has been thinned so it soaks in very fast and you chouldnt even feel a hard spot where you put it.
What do you do to thin the glue. I use fly head cement.
I don't buy small bottles of glue that in the end will cost a ton. I bought a qt of High Gloss Lacquer and a qt of MEK about 6 or 7 years ago and will probably never need to buy any again. I use 50/50 mix of that and it soaks in and dries very fast and works. I use Oral Syringe to draw the thinner out as it should not get on you, but I can use one over and over. I bought a box of 100 probably 3 or more years back and have not made a good dint in that either. I also use some vinyl paint at times and I can use MEK to thin it as well. Some say it goes bad in 1 year, but just a little thinner every year or so and not a problem. I do mostly use powder paint, but I like some of the vinyl as well. Especially the Clear as I can use it on lots of things.
