I want to try out pulling crankbaits, but don't want to buy any line counter reels until I decide if I like it or not. Has anyone used the line counters that clips onto the rod? They cost around six dollars each. A lot cheaper than new reels. Do they perform well? Can I use my 12 ft trolling rods and reels? Thanks
All you are looking for is consistancy, if they will do that they will be fine. Cranking is an addiction, be careful
Waste of $6, I've been told. Just cast as far as you can or let line out by hand and count your pulls.
Or...go with someone who has the gear. I'm booking summer trips now. ;)

wilbur taught me to pull cranks at crappie camp last weekend saw billbobs 240 bandits, so went bought bandits and told wife and fishing partner i wanted okumas for birthday this week. Crappie fishing is gonna get alot more pensive .getting a 898 then want a 858 or 958 thats a done deal.but i got to have a terrova ipilot i link.
Like the others have said, don't waste your money on the clip on counters. Buy the line counter reels or come up with a system to estimate amount of line out. I caught tons of fish with crank baits before getting line counter reels a few years ago.
When I first started pulling cranks last year I got the cheap line counter.

I quickly found out that it took to much time to go that route. I bought 4 Okuma's soon after that and just bought 2 more.

Of course I first pulled crankbaits with my FiL which he doesn't use any line counter. He has been doing it so long that he just knows how much line to let out.
I use cheap line to spool my reel with and then thread good line in a different color with how much feet I want to let out.
Measure in yard and put a piece of tape on the line at whatever feet u want out. That's what I did until I bought okumas.
