I recently upgraded my elite 5 DSI to a 998c with side scan. I am very impressed with the side scan technology and most of the other features found on the 998c, however you cannot beat the down imaging found on the elite 5 DSI. I was going to sell the elite 5, but have started considering running both units as console units to have the best of both worlds.
Does anyone know if having two transducers so close together on the transom will cause some sort of static?
As long as they are operating at different frequencies they will be fine. I know the Elite 5 is 455 or 800 kHz but I don't know what the 998 operates at.
Probably shouldn't be any interference, seeing as how the 998c runs 83/200kHz and the E5DSI runs 455/800kHz. There might be, however, some bleed over from the pings of one unit to the other ... that might cause erroneous signals on the screens, if the two transducers are side by side.
The biggest factor I can think of, would be the possibility of the E5DSI transducer blocking the side scan signal of the 998c. If that proves to be the case, I'd relocate the E5DSI to the trolling motor ... use the 998c to scan the area, mark the spots & go to them, then use the E5DSI to mark that spot & use the split screen to stay on it (GPS/waypoint & DI). It's much easier than having to be turning around to look at a console mounted unit, if in fact it could be turned around to face the bow of the boat.

yes there is bleed over. I run a 858 and 998 both on the console and there some issues directly related to running them both but it not terrible, just annoying. Just position the Side scan transducer lower than the DSI transducer and you will be fine and far as blockage. I do have to raise the motor just tiny bit to get a really good left side view.
