I do it alot. I usually dont use a RR though Im sure it would be fine. i just fish 1/8 or 1/16 oz head under float bout 12 to 18 inches and cast to visible cover like stakes and stickups. Let it sit for a few seconds and jiggle or reel very slow. blue and chartreuse my fav.
It's a real popular method up here where I fish. Adjust your depth as needed to find them.
I have never used a rr under a float. Have fished jigs under one and this is a real good method when the fish are shallow. You can fish one deep but you will either need a slip float or a long rod so you can cast a locked down float. Either way I want the jig to move, so it is more of a casting and reeling in slowly. Jig it back. Stop at let it sit for 10 seconds and jig it back some more. Good Luck.
I like to cast a jig under a slip bobber and slowly dance it back to the boat but, sometimes they just want it perfectly still. Crazy fish!
The majority of crappie fisherman on Douglas float and fly or jig fish in he winter and spring months. Depending on the depth of the fish it is used on up to 10 foot rods and fished 12 foot deep or deeper at times.
this winter up at tim's i used it shooting docks.
A slip float and bobber stop. It really helps to keep the jig in the strike zone alot longer after you've found the depth. I drill out the hole some because you dont want it to walk back on you, that 5-6ft it walks back on the fall is 5-6ft less area you've covered at depth of fish. The larger hole allows the line to slip through faster and the this method means you can use what ever rod you want.
I use this same rig at times when working stick ups or brush piles. Just adjust the bobber stop as needed. Never used a RR with it though. Good luck bud.
Remind me to take a look at your setup Tom.
i use a foam float above a spoiler shad or jig
