A buddy of mine is taking me to Lake Atkins this weekend to chase the Florida Strand Green Carp, but I wont leave the lake without trying to catch a few crappie. I dont hear a lot about atkins, and I have never fished there. Anyone have any insight on this lake and the crappie in it? Thanks in advance guys.
I hear it is an awesome Bass lake. Sorry, that's all I have, never been there.
Been there once and we was hoping to get into some of those big bass ourselves but came away very disappointed, only catching one smaller bass??? Lots of brush, no boat lanes, lots of snakes, although it may be a bit early for the snakes now they were out in full force that day we were there about 3yr ago. Your right Its supposed to have big bass in it and just looking at it we thought they'd be there too but sadly no bass to speak of. That was the day we left there disgusted and headed South and happened onto Harris Brake, which was another no boat lane, brushy, no catching bass lake. I know I don't sound very positive but I'm being as honest as possible. We fished top water, spinnerbait, wacky rig soft plastic stick baits, and C-rigs but none of that worked. Our good lakes we've found a few fish in our travels were Monticello, Columbia, a few on the lower arm of White Oak which was drained recently so I'm sure it's a bust for a few years. We never crappie fished any of these waters though but they all seem to have plenty of brush. I have crappie fished White Oak though...spent a whole day there and never boated a crappie. If your up near Atkins I'd say the better bet for crappie would be Conway or Dardanelle. I do wish yall luck though and maybe yall can get em to bite something we didn't try.
try fishing along the dam on the east side or at the marina cove for crappie lots of bass at west end just watch for stumps

I live in conway and am making this trip with a buddy who has caught some nice bass there and wants to "show me" all the hype. Used to fish it all the time. Usually in September it gets hot in the Lucky Landing cove..........you can walk across the boats. Most guys just fish next to each other right there. That's the only place I ever caught any decent crappie, or within 250 yards of there. There is a cove up the shore from there about 500 yards that looks like crappie heaven.........the tornado created massive blowdowns, etc. I've yet to catch a fish in it.
I heard 3rd hand that it was 'poisoned' for crappie. I don't know what that means, or by whom, but it's not been worth going to for several years. They have massive bass in it. I saw a great sight last time I was there.........a disabled guy in a cool bass boat holding up a 9 lb'er. I was more tickled for him than if I'd caught fish. But I've never caught them there until Sep/Oct, and I don't know why.
I'll agree with you there! I went today and fished from 9:30-about 3:30 and only boated one crappie off Dequeen lake. I wasn't too disappointed though considering I wasn't the only one who didn't catch.Quote:
