Spring Bayou(4-23-13) and mystery fish

Had work in town, so dragged the boat to Marksville to fish the afternoon. Had high hopes.

After seeing that some couyon stole my ice chest and cushion from my bay boat, I continued on to Spring Bayou.

Grass is advanced from last year. Would have thought the opposite with the grass carp. My honey hole is already unfishable.

The only good news was, the various "bream" species are on fire. Hitting jigs and roadrunners. caught chinqs, bluegill, goggleye and this critter that looks like a spotted sunfish that we are not even supposed to have.Attachment 123640

Anyway, I ended up finding a white perch pattern, but out of 15 - 20, I had only one for sure keeper.

Maybe next month.

wow looks like some sort of goggle eye / brim hybrid or something...

Its a bream!



Looks good for the red-spotted sunfish, thought it was a green at first but the mouth is too small

I think that is what we call a stump sucker up here in NWLa. has
a mouth sorta like a goggle eye.Have never tried to eat one.

I agree with prowler, it looks like a goggle eye / blue gill cross.

It's a spotted sunfish, or commonly called a stumpknocker. They are deceptively thick and, for it's size, easy to fillet. Much thicker than your regular sunfish. There's an excellent article on catching bream on drop shot rigs on Toldeo Bend in this month's Louisiana Sportsman. There is a side article that describes this fish with a picture. The author also states about using two crickets on the hook instead of one to keep the little ones away. A good read for me, I enjoyed it (JR, the article doesn't mention anything about jigs :)).

I'm just like you, nononocan't grab crickets with my fat fingers. Maybe some one should write one about catching em with jigs.:biggrin Lake P is full of fat ones.

I guess you're right JR, it would take me a while to thread two crickets on a hook while another 4-5 are running around the boat the same baiting that same hook. I'm going to try it though.

Lol, sometimes you've got to cripple em before you can catch them, also been thinking i should invest in a square cricket can so at least i can get them cornered,

in a round can we just go round and round :hatchet:
