NWR 4/14/13 report
Put in at Bobs around 8:00 and ran down to the Carolina/ Va. buoy. Fished small creek there with no results except for 4 bowfin. Moved back out to main water at the buoy and started working back. While Tightlining and dragging corks with minnows I was able to find a stretch of about 75 yards long where I started to pick up some dinks in the 8-10" range with a few sprinkled in at 11-12". Around 20-25 crappie were pulled out of this stretch with a few drifts. Most colors seemed to worked on the jigs tipped with minnows Blue ice, Blue thunder, Bleeding shad, Red/pearl white, Black gum and cajun cricket. A few of these were pulled in from under the bobbers out back. Mixed into this was 1 Striper and about 6-7 white perch with no size in the 8-10" range also. All of these fish were found about 25-40 yards off the bank in water 4-9' deep. Never found anything casting to the banks with beetle spin hoping to maybe find a few more white perch. Water temp on the day started at around 66 moving up to 70 by days end. Clarity was 18-22" deep, which is not bad for NWR, when you got through the pollen. Water levels were up with the south winds we've had recently. l
headed back around 3:00 when the main river turn into a skiers paradise. Speaking with James at Bobs he informed me that the white perch bite was pretty good a week or so ago but had fallen off just recently. Talking with another angler on the water who had been bass fishing for the day. He had picked up 5-6 small bass throwing top water buzz baits in the morning and later turning to sinko worms. I hope this report is helpful to anyone heading this way to NWR. This is a great time of year for fishing!!
