lower unit, 1990, 25 hp, Mariner
Traded a fellow a boat for some fishing tackle, a couple of rods and reels and a 25 hp, 1990 Mariner outboard (electric start). I just stored the motor in my boat shed all winter. Recently I got it out and it would not turn over with a battery I new was hot and good. It did finally start one time and ran good but it died and then would not turn over again. I thought it was something wrong in the power head but I was wrong, apparently it had water in the foot and the housing had frozen and busted right down either side of the threads at the plug where you put oil in the lower unit. It must have had bad seals. When we took the lower unit off the motor turns over good and free. The motor seems worthy enough to repair.
It has that shift on the tiller handle.
If any of you guys know of a lower unit or even just the housing I would like to know about it. I am located in SW Arkansas. The nut inside the housing that has to be removed, most likely with a special tool, has some of the ears sheared off it, I hope I can get it off if I just replace the housing. Any advice on that would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for checking out the post.
