Choke problem?

I have a '03 Merc 90hp 4 stroke, It is hard a starter in the cold weather, after it starts it usually restarts easy enough. I got to thinking maybe I need to have a monetary switch so I could hold the choke on longer when I start it up. The ignition switch has the push to choke feature.
I started looking for the wire to the switch and didn't fine one. All the wires at the ign switch don't light up when the key is pushed in, no extra wires at the switch. I guess they didn't run the wire from the motor to the harness. My next step is to run a new wire and add a switch. I'm assuming they use the black wire as ground and the blue is the hot side.
Anyone have any ideas? This is on a pontoon boat and the harness has about 8 feet of extra length under the dash so I'll trim the casing to see if the wire was cut off..or?

if that's an electric primer, no choke butterfly in carb, like mine is then when you push in on the key it gives it a shot og gas to get more you have to push the key in again. I have to hit my key 4 or 5 times to get a good prime once it starts, if it is cold ,I give it a shot when it sounds like it's going to die.

Wannabe, That's what it looks like but I can't find anything on the switch that shows a charge when the key is pushed. I have a momentary switch switch I can hook up. Just gotta run the wire

If that is a carburated motor the wire going to the switch should be Yellow/Black

Bill, The wire at the carb is black the other is blue. I just don't think they wired the switch

That is strange. Yellow/black is industry standard and should be in the harness. I've given away most of my manuals so I don't have one specifically for your motor. It would make sense if your motor was EFI as they do not have a choke.

That motor doesn't use the switch for cold start enrichment. In this picture, items 14 to 17 are cold start enrichment. It's done automatically, not by use of the key. My motor had symptoms like yours. I spent quite a bit of time on my carbs getting them set up right. I doubt it's the enrichment devices, more than likely tiny passages blocked. You might also check & make sure your fuel line bulb is pumped up full. My 1999 Merc 90hp 2strk will not start easily, even when choked, if I forget to pump the bulb :Doh:

And since it's on a pontoon, you have portable gas tanks ... so make sure you have the vent valves open, too.

Pappy, I pump the bulb 1st thing and a couple times while cranking it. My tank is a built in 35 gallon, I'd hate to have to carry that to the pump. :-)

With the help of Shellback I think I cured the problem. He lead me to the mixture enricher solenoids which checked OK. What I had forgotten was a loose wire I found on the ignition switch while I was installing a new radio. I had tightened the wire but didn't put two and two together till I had spent some time fooling around with the carbs. I tried starting the thing this morning and it fired off perfectly 1st try (never happened before). It had set for over a week which usually means start die start die for 4-5 minutes to get an idle. This time it idled right away. It's warm today so the real test will be when it's really cold outside.
Once again the great guys and gals on CDC came thru.
