:biggrin Ok, so i've been thinking about making some of my own gear. I have an idea to make jig heads cheap for small jigs. But i don't know if it has been tried before.

:scratchhead Could using a small amount of candle wax(colored, white, clear, etc.) on the shank just before the eye of the hook be used as a simple jig head for small fish like bluegills and other small fish? :confused:

:twocents I just want some opinions on this to see if its do-able and effective if anyone tried this. Unscented candles are easy to come by and making different colors could be as easy as adding a few drops of food coloring to the wax if its not colored.

i can always add a small piece of chunked up waste lead to the wax before it cools and blend it into the wax to make it less noticeable and smooth.

Just use beads as a head, but you would need some bead head fly hooks for best use of cheap beads like from the hobby store. There are slotted ones you can use for jig hooks, but they cost more than just buying jig heads. With fly hooks you can make them any way you want. You can also use a jig hook and tie it without a head of lead or anything else.

Kitty, go to Walmart and find a pack ov the small split shot of the smallest sizes. Just pinch one on the shank of your hook. You can take them off and reuse on other hooks. I am all about making the things you can and saving every penny you can but some things just arnt worth the aggravation. I do applaud you for wanting to do things for yourself though.

Hey, Ms Kitti ... yes, Cray does have a good point ... the "first & only jig" that I ever "made" was a long shank hook with a split shot sinker pinched down on the shank, over a piece of Peacock feather. It was horrible looking :Rofl but, you know what ... I fished with it, anyway, and actually caught a small Bass on it, before it tore up :Doh: But, hey ... it worked !!

I wouldn't even worry too much about coloring the head ... I've mostly used unpainted jigheads, for the last 30yrs, and the fish still bite them. Remember ... even lead (gray) is a "color".

I don't think candle wax would work for more than one fish, even if you could get it to stay on the hook. The fish would tear it up or it would get soft and fall off. Plus wax is less dense than water so it floats. Just get a package of round split shot and pinch them on the hook. If you want to paint them inexpensively, use nail polish.

How bout just using the thread to tie a head on a plain jig hook, I've made some crappie jigs like that, and it works pretty good. Very slow fall, but they do fall.

Hot glue works wonders and can be found in many colors for really cheap.

For weight, brass, copper, lead or other wire wrapped under the hot glue works just fine. Or small split shot crimped on then covered in glue.

Lead wire with a couple of drops of super glue then wrap thread over it on a jig hook and you are good to go. Make it heaver by wrapping the lead further down the hook like a weighted woolly bugger. You could also use a brass bead head.
