Senate Bill #58 may raise boat registrations 150%

Many boaters have caught by surprise by Senate Bill 58 which would hike boat registration fees to as much as $150 per year. (Up from a flat rate of $15 per boat per year, now.) Much of that money would go in to a fund for dredging … somewhere. It’s not spelled out in the bill, which was co-sponsored by State Senator Norman Sanderson.
All this has more than a few folks wondering why the senator representing Oriental and the Sailing Capital of NC wants to boost the fee/tax on their boats that much. Reader Jim Barton put some of those thoughts in to a letter, which you can read in Letters To The Editor.
