I just bought a Minn Kota Edge 45 LB thrust bow mount trolling motor. My question is for the wiring. The battery i currently have is a cranking battery, but it is not used for cranking the motor as it is a pull start motor. The only thing that i currently have hooked up to the battery is the depth finder and my running lights. Will it be OK to run wire to attach to the current battery or should i buy a deep cycle battery? This is a 12V motor.
A start battery won't give you much time running a trolling motor on it, would be bad to get out and not get back. Get a good deep cycle for trolling and leave the DF and lights on the start battery. That's what I'd do.
thats what i was thinking about doing. but dont have any room in the back for a second battery, that i can see. I can probly put a battery in the gun box on my boat (war eagle 542 for reference) but dont want to add any unneccesary weight. thanks for any advice.Quote:

If you can't fit one then at the very least get a good DeepCycle battery. Not a good idea to have finder on troller battery but it is what it is. That cranking battery will not last long running it down and recharging. Lighter plates and fewer of them will cause them to warp and short.
a deep cycle will do it all for a 1 day fishing in a small boat .
I'm gonna pick up a deep cycle battery here soon if I cant find one sitting around at our place on the lake. Im probly going to just mount the battery on the front of the boat so I dont have to run any wire and just hook up the wires from the foot pedal directly to the batt. Would it be fine to just strap the battery down on the bow of the boat and not worry about it getting wet? I would obviously take the batt off when Im not using it.
Make sure you put a in-line fuse. Just in case. Been there done that. Jim C.
Most states make you have it strapped down and in a battery box
or rubber covers over the post just saying
Why do I need a fuse? And I was planning on having it in a box and strapped down.
