When my HB 898 was installed by BPS, they put the antenna puck up by the console. I want to move it to the back above the transducer. My question is, does the pck have to be installed on a flat surface pointing straight up or can it be on a slanted surface? The transom on my Nitro is not flat and I was thinking I may have to mount on the floor in back. Thanks for your help.

I don't think the puck cares about it's mounting angle as long as it has a clear view of the sky. If you mount it where the boat sides block some of it's view it may not be able to see some of the satellites on that side of the boat tho as they work on line of sight.
It really depends on how much of an angle you are talking about here. The GPS Receiver typically will pick up the signal from a GPS satellite that is ten degrees or more above the horizon so it is a directional antennae. The signal from satellites that are very low on the horizon and some of the best for the trilateration calculations that have to be made to determine your position on the earth; so the more low horizon satellites you can track the more accurate will be your positioning (up to a point of course). Angling the GPS Receiver could not allow it to track a low horizon satellite that could make a difference.
What I would do is temporarily install the GPS Receiver in the position you want to use it in and view the Estimated Position Error on the GPS Diagnostic View. Compare these readings to what the same shows when you hold the GPS Receiver up above everything on your boat. You can use something like a piece of masking tape to hold the GPS Receiver in place or even get fancier and use some double sided tape. This can be done while on land as long as there are no buildings or mountains around that can block the signal from the GPS satellites. You do want to spin your boat around in a 360 degree circle when doing this so as to place any low horizon satellite at different compass directions to the GPS Receiver in case something on the boat would only block the signal from one direction.
This is what I have mine mounted on JT. Just make sure you mount it on the slope so that you can adjust it to compensate for the slope.

Hmmm, I would like to see what sort of EPE he was getting and how many satellites he was tracking.
I realize he's looking for schools of suspended fish....but at 170ft both sides SI...??
No wonder his screen "blacks out" at about 100 left and right...
I think he would have utilized his SI better by a setting of about 100-110ft max both sides...and showed better definition of the fish schools that he was targeting at 20ft from the boat...
But Hey...what do I know .....he's the professional...:dono
