How About Some Book Suggestions....

..... for all the times this weather keeps us off the water.

I'm more of a non-fiction reader but will start off with one I recently finished about an astounding and very admirable fellow that I know I could have never endured what he went through. It is titled "Unbroken" written by Laura Hillenbrand and is about Louie Zamperini's survival as a Japanese POW during the II World War. I really found it a great read and think you will also if you haven't already read it.

Also it looks like a movie is in the works. Louis Zamperini's epic life may finally get its Hollywood movie - LA Daily News

I just finished Thomas Jefferson, The Art of Power, by Jon Meacham. An excellent read. I wished I possessed Jefferson's determination to learn.

Just cracked open Bill O'Reilly's book, Killing Kennedy. His book, Killing Lincoln was great.

My sister bought me a book for Christmas titled, Cross Roads by WM. Paul Young, I probably should have read this one first. I know it is going to make me reflect on my spirituality, who likes a book that kicks one in the teeth. I already know I'm rotten.

I recently picked up Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. He's a very interesting guy. If you've never read him before, you might want to start with Fooled by Randomness.

My daughter bought me a special edition hardback set of Calvin and Hobb's for Christmas - really enjoying them, Calvin has some very good points.

"Valley Forge" by Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen. Really tells what it was like and what men can accomplish when fighting for what they believe in, even in desperate conditions. Their books on the civil war are good too.

If you watched the series 'Pacific" about the Marines in WWII, one of the Marines was Sledge. He wrote a book that some of the movie was based on. The book is "With the Old Breed, At Peleliu and Okinawa" Unimaginable horror those front line Marines went through.

Coincidence I guess. I am reading the book "Intrepid" by White and Ganht. I am headed to Okinawa right now with Halsey and crew. We just sank the Yamota, but are getting pelted by kamakazies. It is a good read. Keeps your nose in the book.

I'm a bit of a history buff, myself. Here are a couple of my favorites:

River Run Red by Andrew Ward. Nathan Bedford Forrest was the greatest Civil War General, IMHO.

Alabama's Own In France by William Henry Amerine. I love reading about The Rainbow Division in WWI. My Grandfather was recommended for the MOH in WWI. Douglas McArthur reduced it to a DSC.

White Devil by Stephen Brumwell. The story of Major Robert Rogers and his "rangers". The birth of "special forces" in North America. French and Indian War.
