I say it depend on you likings. i have a 39 fp hand trolling motor and it move my alum 1652 boat good. I am going to get me a foot feed trolling motor soon as i am liking to get in to trolling some and the handle may get in my way of that.
I just put a 55lb foot controlled minnkota on a 1548. I like it so far
I would say spend a little more and get a foot controlled tm. As your skill progresses you will want to try different methods, and the hand steer could be problematic for some of those methods. Just my .02.

Yes hand controls and spider rigging trolling and jigging really may become a hand full but can be done!
Thanks for the input, now let the search begin!
Try to get as big a trolling motor as you can afford at least 24 volt. You can back off on power and speed but can't add to it if you don,t have it. Mr Gary Hubble in at H20 sports works on every make and model of trolling motors he can guide you in the right direction and usually has some used ones at good prices.
Get you a Terrova with Ipilot. Foot pedal if you need it and remote. Use the remote for couple of trips you'll forget about using foot pedal.
Foot controll all the way. :twocents
