The bait holder barb on some jig heads is hard for me to remove. I vertical fish almost exclusively and use only the jigs that I tie. The barb is in the way for the thread and chenille and also interferes with the balance of the jig. I am using wire cutters to remove the lead barb but this is a real pain in the caboose. Help is appreciated!
The easiest way is not to buy that type of jighead. ;) It's not meant for tying.

The collarless, or ball heads are much easier to use and designed for tying. Sometime in you travels get some single ground side cutters, like are used for removing the excess from poured jigs. Only being ground on one side you can get right next to the area you want to keep and cleanly remove the rest. Well worth the $.
I use a gate cutter made by Gudebrod to remove the spike when I am tying jigs.
I do use plastic grubs from time to time so I buy molds with a collar and spike. This give me the broad option of both worlds.
mashing it down with smooth pliers works better than cutting.

Look at walmart, fabric and craft stores. In the craft section, where the jewelry making stuff is, "wire cutters". I have a pair of gate cutters from Jann's and walmart, they are just the same.
