HD in the 2013 year 800 and 900 series are LED backlit...
I've heard reports that the LED backlit screens are strikingly brighter...(I have not seen one myself)...
The HD models are the same MFSR price as last year...the older ones are being sold cheaper to clear them from store shelves...

You can view the 2013 in sunlight, without a sun screen on it. :ThumbsUp
You can view the 2012 in sunlight also....but a sunscreen does help you see the image better. Likewise, you can change the colors some to get better views in different light conditions.
Duncan kind of makes it sound like its washed out. Its not.
I dont use a screen for mine.duncan got issues.......ive looked at the two side by side only in doors.theres a noticable difference in the brightness
Tks for the input. My fishing Buddy has the older unit and its a little hard to see in the sunlight sometimes. Was just wondering how much brighter the 2013 unit is and if it,s worth $500 more.
I buy the best I can afford. I haven't looked at the newer models, to give you a comparison. Not sure if this means anything, but I have no plans to trade in either of my units right now.
Back to affordability though, if it was my money, I'd be hard pressed to buy a "legacy" unit over the most current. Have you checked with Brian at BBG on pricing for the newer units? I'm sure you can get them for less than MSRP.
The 998's little cousin 898 is not a bad unit to have and have a brighter screen and save some coin.
The only difference in the '12 vs '13' is the new ones have the link for the HB 360 degree module. Everything else is the same.......this is according to Bass Pro staff in Nashville. I would assume talking to HB rep would be smarter to get the straight information.
The "link" for the 360 is software and is now available for any SI series unit that has Ethernet capability..(except the 1197)...Quote:
