I'm not sure if both of your questions refer to Lowrance..(because I thought Lowrance didn't have adjustable chart speed)..
But, in a HB...
* For 2d - higher chart speed will "refresh" the screen data more (for example - to see your jig moving on the screen...)
* For SI and DI - matching chart speed to boat speed will give the "truest" ratio of bottom scanned (per ping) to screen data plotted ...(for example...too slow and fish echoes will look like dots - too fast and fish's echoes will look like long streaks)...

I got a older lowrance and was wondering how to match the chart speed to ping speed.. and yea I was wondering bout the hb to.. I got a di and the 2d.. just don't really understand how to adjust the speed.. seems that if you adjust it high as you can that would give you the quickest response and most accurate but then why would they make it able to turn down idk
