How Early In Spring Do Mealworms Work For Bluegills ?

This year I used mealworms for the first time in Kentucky fishing Bluegills. I am from Wisconsin and never even herd of them before.
My question is do mealworms work right away in the spring or do the Gills go for them better after the warm weather comes ? The reason I ask is I didn’t start using them until July 2012 and that was just because the red worms stopped working so I ask at the bait shop what else might work - I was amazed at how well the mealworms worked. Since then I never went fishing without crickets, mealworms and redworms. For me mealworms seemed to be the most productive.

I use to raise my own mealworms ( very easy to do) and I fished with them year around.

I only use meal worms in the winter. Spring time - Crickets and red worms; Summer & fall - Night crawlers; Winter - night crawlers & meal worms. It seems to catch fish the different ways I fish the seasons.

Anytime.....but I would reather have wax worms given the choice.

I should have mentioned wax worms also but still think mealworms worked better for me in the summer - they are harder for the dinks to steal.
I have used waxies allot in Wisconsin ice fishing !!!:fish

Wax worms can be the bait of choice, when Ice fishing in our area.

the only way to know for shure how there gunna work is to try em. If i can find some this spring ill try em out. i almost always use waxies.

I have had good luck with wax worms. Caught my biggest gill with them. Poor worm never had a chance though............White Flag Icon

I raise my own mealworms and feed them the banana peels. right now I've got a zillion mealworms . use chicken laying mash works best for me
