I like my rotary for several reasons. It lets me roll it over and see the other side. Nothing more frustrating to finish one and flip it over to find something out of whack. It also helps in putting on the chenille, no changing hands. Most of all it's a good tool. Having good, smooth working stuff just makes the job easier. Should you ever decide to get out of this you can always get most of the money back from a good machine, not so with other stuff. I don't regret the investment of mine.
The first two vices did not rotate my present one is a rotary. The benefits were previously well stated.Quote:

I used a fixed vice for several years. I recently purchased a Peak rotary vice and love it. But if first starting out I would suggest a cheaper fixed vice until you figure out if you are going to like tying and going to stick with it. I just use my fingers and tie half hitches for my finish knots on most simple crappie jigs. If you ever get down to Truman area I live in Clinton and would be glad to show you some things to get you started.
Hello Miller, I followed Jigging15's advice and went with this one to start out with...nice for $15.95. So far it has worked out great, but I can see where a rotary vise would be nice for someone more serious about tying. As a novice this one suits me just fine. I just wanted to make sure I enjoyed tying before spending more on a rotary. I'm using the whip knot with a finisher tool but haven't tested the jigs yet to see if I'm doing it right and if they will hold together.

And while we are talking about whip finishers, I wanted to point out the two that I know of. one is a thompson and the other is a Matarelli. I'm not smart enough to use a Thompson I guess cuz all I get from them is frustrated, and consequently haven't touched one since I bought a Matarelli. These are tough and make finishing so easy. Half hitches have their place, and I use them with certain jigs. The Matarelli does a good job and has a small learning curve.
