Kentucky Lake Bite

Kentucky Lake bite is improving since the cold front last weekend. With good weather forecast for the next week things should really get good! I love fall fishing. It is very under estimated. Here is a couple shots of my buddy Harry. Sorry they aren't better quality. They are cell phone shots without flash and one was into the sun. Out of the last three days yesterday was by far the best. A good mess and some very good fish. These crappie gave the "thump" we love. It was some of my best action of the year. After guiding for many years and doing guide shows at Bass pro Shops in winter I get a bunch of calls. Everyone wants to fish the spawn but I tell them the fall and winter fishing can be fantastic and can be better than the spawn. The fish are stacked up, fishing pressure is much less, and winter on Kentucky Lake can mean (if you can time your trip with the weather) comfortable days in the 40's and 50's. A great time to be here!

If you're willing to share and expecting to draw a crowd, should we expect that the Blood River arm might be a good choice for Dec/Jan? Would you use the 402 or 68 ramp? Your years of expertise are much appreciated.

Sorry about the boat ramp reference. Wrong arm. Never been there. Been wrong a lot in my life. Got a suggestion for a ramp?

Both Blood and Jonathan can be good in December and January. In fact all winter and into spring. For Blood I would use the Wildcat Ramp off KY 280. It is a nice ramp with good parking. If I were fishing Jonathan use the 68 ramp. Bad thing with that ramp is if you have a strong west-southwest wind it can be really choppy. It helps to have someone with you to help load on a day like that.

I've seen 2 boats sunk at the JC ramp! Guys went to the truck & boat was on bottom before they got back with the trailer! I was yell'n at'um the whole time!

I plan on making a trip over to Ky Lake and wondered if the parking pass I purchased from the Corps of Engineers would get me a free pass to park when launching my boat over there?:help

You can use about any of the public ramps for free Seeker including the state parks. Some of the resorts like Sugar Creek Bay Marina (the old Irvin Cobb marina) charge a fee ($7) but the Wildcat (State) ramp is free on Blood. I believe launching and parking is free at the Moors.(Big Bear) They even have two ramps for when things get busy but the north ramp by the docks is pretty shallow at winter pool. There is also a state ramp in Big Bear, Little Bear, KY Dam Marina, Jonathan Creek, Cherokee Park, Fenton, Kenlake, and a couple more south of Blood and on the LBL. You can find a ramp for just about any part of the lake you want to fish and usually there is no charge. Several are also free on the LBL (like Fenton) and Lake Barkley as well.
