I have a 5 speed, 12v M/K troll motor that I would like to convert to a variable speed. The #1 setting is too fast to spiderrig/tightline in the winter and I have tried wind socks, chains etc. (too much trouble). Looked at some of the PWM units on E-bay but not sure if these would hold up for all day trolling on #1 speed. Any info, experience or comments on trying to do this would be appreciated.
How much too fast? You might scrub a little speed by switching to a 3-blade prop or even trimming a little off each blade of your prop. Make sure you keep it balanced.
It is possible to convert some motors by changing the board and and comm cap. Call John Jones at Jones Trolling Motor 870-773-3474 and he can advise you on your options.
Think I saw where Canepole built something to convert a 5 speed to variable speed a while back
A Minnkota Maximizer would work if you can find one. They show up on E-bay once in a while.
