Today my hds-7 gen 2 gps/sonar flashed while using the trolling motor and the screen got darker. Could this be a bad battery,or a bad or loose connection. When I had a Lowrance X510 c, I could check the voltage using the unit.I am not sure this unit will do this,or I can't seem to find out how. It is connected to the trolling motor battery, should I connect it to the cranking battery. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any input.
You can select Voltage overlay display. But, the reading is not instantaneous and is an average of a period of time, usually 1 second. Sounds like a bad connection or a battery issue to me.Quote:

I agree only trolling motor on battery and wires need to run seperate. Also, is there more than one unit running at the same time? Sometimes transducers soundings cross and cause this. If it does it on gps section then its voltage.
Best to put your front locator on it's own battery.
In addition to a separate battery would it also be advisable to twist the power wires?
Twisting power wires is primarily about reducing fields around the wires and decreasing the effects of fields that exist near the wires by constantly changing the direction of the wires, which effectively causes the fields to cancel out. It is most effective when there is no mechanical electrical connection between the circuits.
The main cause of interference from trolling motors is the rapid current surges caused by the pulsing of the PWM controller that allows for variable speed trolling motors. When they share a battery, the input power of the depthfinder is going to rapidly change voltage at the same rate as the trolling motor speed control, and it can be very difficult to filter such noise out of the analog circuits in the sonar. It would be much like trying to write smoothly while someone is dropping a bowling ball on your desk constantly.

Checked it out next morning and the voltage was up only .3 of a volt after 16 ours of charging. he gave me a new battery , under warrenty, no charge. I thought it might have been the battery, because it showed over 12 volts hooked to on board charger and 10 volts unhooked. Went fishing yesterday after hooking sonar to cranking battery and things went well. Thanks for everyones input
