Ky Lake in late February march or april

i had to cancel my deer hunting trip in Nebraska due the the out break of EDH im concidering fishing ky lake for the first time which would be the better month february(late) or in march and maybe april. what should i expect during during this time frame i will be spider rigging most of the time unless crappie are moving up shallow

Can be great to horrible to anywhere in between depending on lake conditions and fronts. Spring is really a crap shoot weather and water wise. Middle of March-early April would be my pick if I had to come and spider rig in that time period. If it were me I would think about November also, but I don't spider rig so wouldn't know how well that works in November-December.

Ditto on the above. Anytime is a great time to fish, if you are flexible watch the weater, water temp, and CC for info and then make your trip. I normally arrive on KY the first week of April, sometimes good and others it may suck, but it is still nice to be on the water. One thing about KY lake, it will test your skills, watch what the locals are doing. I long line and pretty well have the lake to myself. Most others are spider rigging. I like to cover more ground. You may consider coming down to Lake Talquin in the Fl panhandle the 8th - 10th of November. We have a big Super Slabfest and it will be two days of fun. Lot's fish over 12" and fat. Check out the Florda site. Come on down, you will have fun. October thru December is fantastic. January thru March, you work a little harder.

The last week of March & first week of April are my favorite because fish seem to run a little larger. It can also be some rough weather about that time which could make it very hard to fish with some techniques.

Cold fronts, high winds can knock them in the head too. People were catching crappie real late this year. Very unusual. Good Luck!

Everyone's advice has been right on the money. This year the best spring crappie fishing was in March for me as there was an early spring. Bad thing was lake was still close to winter pool so a lot of cover was dry. Like PAB said it is a crap shoot for sure. For me I like fall fishing better. It is a little more predictable. November can be as good or better than spring.

I'm definiteley no expert but have went down for the last several years. We fish the area around NewJohnsonville Tenn. Old guide's correct that water level is critical to fishing a large majority of the cover. A lot of our favorite stakebeds were unreachable last year. 1 to 2 ft makes a huge difference. Hopefully our timing is better next year. We were there in March also. Best bet is to stay flexible with your dates & read all the reports you can.

The water level is a big factor, but more importantly to me how hard is it going to be falling or rising. Fast falling water levels can be the kiss of death in spring. Fish seem to be alot more sensitive to cold fronts as well. The wind can also be a much bigger problem in spring as well. I've camped for a week at a time in April several times and only had a couple of days it was safe to be on the lake during that period. But you can hit it good and have a blast. All factors being equal, it's probably easier for the average guy to catch a mess in the spring. But for me personally if I ever had to move off and scheduled a trip to come back and fish, no way I would choose any month over November.
