Been trying 2 different tightline methods with mixed results. Method 1 have weight above a swivel a 12''to 18'' leader attached to jig head or RR. Method 2 a 12'' leader attached to jig or RR the sinker attached approx. 18'' below. Using same baits and weights I find advantages and disadvantages to both. I now call upon the experince of others, which method has proved the best and under what circmstances. I am now at my indecisive best. Thanks.
I would say it depends on what you are fishing. You can use many different set ups. I'll tell you what I use and you can try it. If fishing open water or deep grass lines I can get away with a jig head near the bottom if I'm fishing brush or deep structure I tend to use a drop shot style set up so one the weight bangs around the wood waking the crappie up and if it snags it comes free eaiser or breaks only loosing the weight.
If I know where the fish are I'll just cast to them and count down or use a bobber stop with a 1/16 oz jig and a large split shot (if it's deeper than 10') placed about 12" above the jig.
I'm sure other people have different ways of fishing I would say just keep playing with it until you dile it in.
I spider rig most of the time and I rig mine with a swivel 18in of mono, 1/2 oz weight bead then another swivel tie on a 8 in leader with duo lock snap so I can change out lure quick. I have found this to work better than the longer leader for me. If fishing deeper than 8 ft I tie another 8 in leader to top swivel and use a plain hook tied with rubber legs and flash with minnow. When fishing deeper brush I do like Crappieman. Also all my mainlines are 12/4 Cajun red braid.
A 6lb mainline of vicious hi vis.. a one oz with a swivel in each end called troll techs and a clear 12" 4 lb leader.. some times just an gold aberdeen sometimes a jig.
in the winter i use bottom bouncer rigs basically a bass casting sinker with 18" up a three way with a snelled gold aberdeen
both of which are my last resort...like utr said on another thread if you see me tightlining im probably not having a banner day lol unless its corks and its late fall or early spring
Method 2, and only in 10 feet deep fishing.
If deeper try drop shot method, with sinker on bottom dragging, sometimes that dragging sinker can make a difference. ( works good in NWR in front of park)
