just wondered if anyone was finding them and what part of the state.
Hey RS found some puff balls on 8/26 just Northwest of Allen County. Found them in a usual spot on South facing slope in the woods the soil is sandy clay. I found some a couple years ago at the begining of deer shotgun season. Had never seen them that late before.
how does the tatse compare to morels?
RS - Like morels, I get them in my yard each year (sucks being me!). This year, I had a bunch the week of 20 August. I ended up slicing and eating three of them, but the rest wasted away. Just last Friday (28 Sept), I had a really nice one (don't shoot me) that I just mowed over. I was going away for the weekend and knew that it would be no good by the time I got back.
Kevin - in my opinion, they are not near as good as morels, but do offer a similar taste for the fall. I'm sure it's all in how you prepare them.
