You guys down south who fall fish Patoka

Any of you have any idea how busy the campgrounds get around the end (3rd or 4th week) of October (I read they close 11/7)? I wasn't sure with the fall colors stuff happening, how many camped there to enjoy them.

I have found that they do have some 60' deep sites (though not sure how close to the water), which I'd asked in a post a few weeks back, and will probably just take my chances on getting a site late next month (as opposed to reserving a site) on my way south, and to get a better idea if they have anything close enough (to the water) to wheel my Kayak to.

I know they have something going on 2nd or 3rd week-end fall get away or something like that. And they are full for that. But its walk in don't have to make reservations for other dates.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll look at the IDNR website again and see if it lists any activity dates (it probably does, and I just didn't see 'em). If worse comes to worse I'll just head on down to LBL.

Hey NeonMoon...We are having a Super Slabfest at Lake Talquin (just west of Tallahassee, FL) on Nov 10...There will be Crappie.com members there from GA/AL and FL there all week with a big Fish Fry on Friday evening, Nov 9 with several door prizes to be given away and some really great people. Thanks TnT, but doubt I'll be that far south. At $4+/gal (and climbing) for diesel, (and a limited budget), I'm pretty much required to stick to my pre-determined plans/route. I'm hoping not to drive any further than needed to stay out of snow/ice/freezing temps, and stay in the fish at the same time.

Regarding Patoka, I looked on the IDNR site last night and there is a weekend activity (Fall Festival?) on Oct 19th/20th. My plans are to arrive the 22nd or 29th, and hope I can get a site close enough to get the Kayak in the water.

I could be completely wrong, as I don't ever camp at Patoka. But I would call and check about the campground being closed. I know all of the lakes I fish close the gatehouse, and the camp stores. But the campgrounds are open year round, they just have a DNR guy come around and collect the fee. I know its this way at 4 or 5 of the places we fish/camp. Just a thought.

Thanks! It's not going to be a make or break deal if I can't stay there (though I'm hoping to at least do some fishing) since it's just my 1st stop on the way (further) south.

No problem Neonmoon...I definitely understand about the gas price situation.....Talquin isn't very far from Eufaula so I was thinking if you was that far down, Talquin would probably be worth the extra few miles...Really some quality fish there to be caught consistently....I hope you have good luck on your Fall Road Trip and Be Safe!!

You can ask them bout sites close to water they will tell you which ones. Or better yet here is the direct number to modern campground. 812-685-2481 for Patoka Lake.
