Whites at El Dorado

Had a great day chasing whites and wipers at El Dorado Saturday. They were slamming the trolling lures in 15-18 fow. Even the 8" white perch were hammering them. Did manage 2 short walleye in the mix too. The highlight was a 25" wiper. Apparently he wasn't full yet when I threw him in the livewell. I pulled him out at the fish cleaning station and he had one of the 8" white perch in his mouth...sticking out about 2". Must have choked on it. Unless he puked it back up, but when I caught him, he didn't have anything sticking out of his throat.

I like it....you are about 90 miles south of me but I have been meaning to get down there and fish...maybe sometimes this fall.

Awesome! That a good sized wiper. The big wipers are doing there job well of eating up the white perch, even if it's their last meal. :Rofl

From my un-scientific sampling of rod and reel, seems that there is a good year class of wipers in the 23" +- range, .... and they are only going to get bigger in the years to come. :) :biggrin

I caught a lot of them in the 12-16" range Saturday. Had to check all of the whites/wipers in that range as I was catching about half and half.
I'm ready to get back out there. My brother and I are headed out Sunday with Shane. See if he can put me on a keeper eye or 2 this time! We put on a heck of a show on the shorts last time I went out with him in July. That bite has been tough the last couple weeks since this cool-down.

As tempting as it is to throw those big wipers back with all that red meat, I cleaned this big guy. I was going to give it to the neighbor, but since I had the grill fired up last night, I threw him on. After getting the zipper bone out and all the red meat off, I threw it in a plastic baggy with some 'Weber' Tequila Lime marinade in the little marinade packs for about an hour. Threw it on the Weber grill next to my burgers...That rival'd any big walleye on the grill. I was impressed. Nice change from fried fish.

Wiper and White Bass are very good table fare. I clean them up and take out the red meat and then fry them in a beer batter. They are really tasty! The one thing I do not care for is cleaning them. They have a distinct odor of shad and the rib bones are considerably tougher to cut through than that of a crappie.
I have not tried them on the grill but I will have to give that a try. It sounds good! :biggrin

Man I'm hungry, that grilled fish is the stuff right there. I don't clean many wipers myself, but some. I clean some whites though, I got a couple seagulls that love them. Believe it or not those whites are the healthiest fish to eat in KS :yikes It's true!!! That red meat most of us don't like is awesome for your heart and blood vessels, chocked full of Omegas, make you live longer, less need for Viagra. Yeah, it's fishy, but I don't worry about staying against the skin when I filet it off. It seems those shad and sardines have some things in common, and I ain't eating no shad. I'll never fry a white cause they're to good grilled or blackened. Bon appetite :ThumbsUp
