Jigheads with weedguard or no weedguard

Have been fishing on a river with current.Crappie are in heavy cover logjams a 1/16 oz jig is to light a 1/8 oz is just about right.losing a lot of jigheads.Tried jigheads with wire weedguards.Loseing fish because of weedguard. In this situation which is better lose lots of jigheads or lose fish with wire weedguards. anyone else have this problem? Our main bait is a crappie slider weedless but also lose fish trying to set the hook through the plastic!!!!!! Is their a better way of catching these fish?

Guess I would rather lose a jighead than a fish. Have you tried using 30lb mono, tie it in right behind the head as a weed-guard.

Great Tip Stump!!!! Another one is get some really small rubber bands and put them on the barb and around the eyelet, the ones the kids use for braces work great expecially the colored ones!!!!!!!

I have a guide friend that fishes brush 100% of the time and he does a very unusual thing and claims he doesn't loose as many jigs this way due to his customers fishing them. He uses a 1/8 Oz head and a small hook no larger than a #6 and even sometimes a #8. A #4 is too big for him, LOL!
I can't get use to even seeing that, but that is what he uses and catches a lot of crappie and some big ones as well.

I have a customer that said he uses Stickguards for a weedless jig. Eagle Claw makes them and I think they are like soft plastic, but not sure as I have never had on in my hand.

I use brush guards on my jigs rather than the wire weed guards. I buy all my jigs from Nightprowler. (he's on this site)
Herb is a good guy and he makes a quality product. He also has a lite wire hook that is pretty cool too. Maybe even a combo of both the lite wire hook and a brush guard could be an option. I probably have 500 or 600 of his jigs in the boat at all times so if I loose a few I usually don't care.
