Went Saturday morning and got in the train on the flats, seemed to be a little slower than it was 2 weeks ago. Everybody was catching fish, but a lot of small ones, and they appeared to be a couple of feet deeper.
I was out on Sagturday morning-fished from 6 until 12:15 and ended up with 20 keepers but I had to fgiht for them. I had to fish over 12" very first thing over 50+ feet of water but that died off as soon as it began. I ran into a school with about 9 other boats about 7am and the bite was decent on cranks until about 9am, I switched over to tightlining minnows to finish out the day. It appeared that most were longlining jigs, minnows or a combination of the two with good numbers of fish but the throwbacks were at least a 10:1 ratio. The bite slacked off big time by 11:30.
I had hoped the fish would transition into their summertime pattern early this year with normal water levels and the hot days that we have had. The surface temp when I left the lake was 87-88 degrees in some areas. For some reason the fish are not playing nice with others and are in that difficult transition post-spawn period prior to suspending on the main lake in their typical summer pattern. Another thing that stumps me is the lack of shad balls that I was marking in areas where they are normaly schooling by this time of year. With the lack of a cold winter the shad die-of is at a minimum and we should have record numbers of baitfish in the lake which makes for some fat fish. I am definately noticing a huge population on fish in the 8-9 inch class that would be from the spawn during the record flooding that we had over the last 2 years so I think the fishing will be better as the hot summer progresses and these fish put on some weight and length.
On a side note, In 6 years of fishing the lake every week I have never in my life seen as many catfish noodles on the water as I did on Saturday morning. I had to slalom the boat the entire way from Lone Valley to get to my spots. The channel cats are spawning and the eating size 2-4lb fish are in excellent numbers this year. I just wish that people would be more respectable to throwing all 50 of their jugs in the across the entire width of the lake making it difficult to navigate in some areas in low light conditions. Be safe out there.

Hey Paul, I only got to fish Saturday evening and night. Everyone that i spoke to said they were having a little trouble getting keepers(no problems on the dinks thou). My son came home Tuesday from being stationed in Missouri and wanted to fish with me in that tourney Saturday night. He only could mustard till about 2:30 am so we came in and left. We did manage to leave with 51 keepers. We started out in 18+ fow but only small ones, after about 45 mins we headed to the shallows. We caught half of our keepers in 10 fow or less. No bigguns, mostly 10"-11", good eaters. The rest, we set up in 14 fow until we left. One fella did catch a 1.17 lb crappie in butler creek. I have a couple of things to tweek for my setup for nightstalking since i have a new lite but i am going to try and fish Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night including the early mornings. Good luck buddy.
Thanks for the feedback fellows. Maybe not the best of news, but I feel better knowing it wasn't all me.
Adam, I am seeing the same thing. Places that normally have good schools of fish for this time of year aren't holding yet :(
I did see several boats Friday up by Buffalo gap so something going on there.
Hey Chuck, save some for us amauters !! Seriously, I am glad for you, I know you have put in a lot of time on Green learning those fish.
Take care and good luck to all
