experiment failed! try try again

Here are the heads I tried to pour, if you pour much you know your molds will only do so much, but I tried to do a temporary modify just to pour a few of these tiny heads to see if I could get a 1/64 true weight...nope...10. grains....13.6 grains is1/32 so I also could not get the hook to set exactly 90 degrees either....will have to go to a #6 hook and that's as light as I will go..thanks for everyones help...if I pour a few for the couple of guides I help a light 1/32 is all I'll do...I now have a new love for the popeye jig and will start fooling with them a little my tier's block is OVER!!!yeah... PS I can fill the cavity's (jb weild) in a 1/32...to look like a asprin and achieve a 1/64th but naaah... here are a few I tied while pot was heating up and the bad heads too, the pearl glow..I like the yellow and black eye's though...I will incorperate that some where. I just made a single cavity mold with na .150 inch roundhead, I haven't poured it yet cause the melting pot is broken, but thinking it may be 1/70 or so. need to go get dads grain scale and weigh some of this stuff.

Your experiment did not fail, you just learned another way it wont work. It could be due to tin or bismuth in the lead, or you might need to add some to get the proper weight.

liftbite Nice ties. Don't get to wrapped up in exact weight. I have found that close is good enough. There are time on the river when a 1/16 is just not going to get down to where I need it so a 1/8 is fine. Gets it down and catch some crappies. I always think that the guys that have to have a 1/24 oz.are a bit out there as one has to take in current as a factor and it will run faster and slower as the rainfall and wind will dictate. Been there and done that and will not do it again.Yes I use the 1/24 but have found that length is more of a factor than weight.

If the crappie are feeding on a certain size of minnow then it would be better to have the right size of length rather than the right weight. Shorter or longer would make a difference. That is why I have modified my molds to to take different hook sizes. That way I can have different length and weight of jig.

BTW redear is becoming quite a mold maker. Doing a good job and making some really neat molds. One of the really innovative guy that you fellows need to keep your eyes on.

Getting too technical about fishing kinda spoils it for me. I pour, paint & tie my jigs !!! and then fish em. and yeah Redear is getting really good!!!!

You didn't fail! You simply discovered a way that doesn't work!!!

I'm still learning...but where do you use a 1/70.....how do you cast it???? I poured a 10.0 grain head maybe a 1/50th need to do the caulations...I guess there is a use for that light weight...

The head is 10.0 grams...thats 1/44th oz. is 9.9 something. I think Redman is right I'm done with this its too much I want to have fun...I'll pour a light 1/32...10.0 grams try it and just go back to the ole try and true heads...tie with them and have fun...I'll have to change hooks...that I love...they are too heavy...but fit my needs...thanks I'm thinking clearer now...I'm better now thanks everyone!!!!

Heck keep the hooks you like!!!!!!!!! I had a thread until I screwed up my Photo bucket account on mashing small ball head jigs to make aspirin heads, and you don't have to mod any molds - I'll get the photo's reposted.

If the hooks need lighter weight lead shave the sides sand em whatever it'll even out.

We all have insanity on stuff sometimes - mine was trying to match a color of chennile for Peacock - finally mixed two dubbings together and got it as close as I could and it wasn't off by much.
