SENIOR HUNTING/FISHING LICENSE EXEMPTION
For the last several decades, hunters and anglers reaching the age of 65 no longer were required to purchase hunting or fishing licenses.
In an effort to recoup some of this money from this growing user group, as well as federal excise taxes allotted to states based on the number of licenses sold, the KDWPT was in favor of a bill that would eliminate this exemption.
However, the bill was amended and the final version was signed last Friday by Gov. Sam Brownback.
“It ended up that residents age 65 to 74 would now be required to buy a hunting or fishing license but they would get that license for half price,” Tymeson said. “Or, the alternative of buying a one-time lifetime combination license when they reach age 65 at a greatly reduced rate ($40).”
The age for the total exemption needing a license will be 75. All new license changes will take effect January 1, 2013.

Age has no bearing on the cost of managing the resources. Whether you are 25 or 75 it still costs the same to manage the resource. Quite frankly when it comes to fisheries, the retired folk spend a lot more time on the water than those of us that are of working age.
This is really an issue when many of those bitching the most spend more than the cost of the license on breakfast each morning they go out during the week?

Get real entitlement generation! You want to play you have to pay no matter the age! You still have to pay the same amount for a pound of hamburger dont you? Do you get a discount on a gallon of fuel to go to the lake? Do you get a discount on your bait that you buy to go fishing?
Stop and think about what you pay for EACH trip to the lake and you are worried about another $10 bucks a year for a license???? Are you serious? You spend thousand of dollars on a truck to pull your boat and spend hundreds of dollars to put tags on that truck but you are worried over 10 or 20 bucks a year to maintain the resources you so enjoy?

Not trying to be an ass but come on folks, you worked your life and I appreciate that but I as a taxpayer do not owe you anything because you did what all of us must do to survive. Get over the entitlement crap already!

This one has been beaten to death. It's a change that betters the state of KS and is a minor one, but you guys missed the most important change they made this year. :biggrin

ALCOHOL ON STATE PROPERTY

State law formerly allowed alcohol not exceeding 3.2 percent to be legal on state-owned areas like state parks, wildlife areas or state fishing lakes. Federal regulations were more lenient and created a discrepancy for enforcement for areas with both federal parks and state parks in close proximity.

“We didn’t feel that was a very modern approach,” Tymeson said. “Essentially, what this new law allows is for any alcohol to be on our properties and subject to any restrictions we put on it by regulation.”

In the past, areas with problems stemming from parties, etc., like some state fishing lakes, were posted “No Alcohol” to curb these activities.

That option is still available with the new law and can be expanded to other problem areas while allowing a consistent approach with federal properties as to the legalities of alcohol possession.

“This bill was signed by the Governor last week,” Tymeson said.

Crappieslinger When you retire would you be willing to pay more than the non-retired working man?Since you will have time to use the lakes more.I think there will be something you were looking forward too when you retire that the state or feds will take from you and you might not be too happy about it!!Give an inch and they will take a mile.I just hope we will be able to have and afford the opportunity to fish during the week and eat breakfast when we retire.Hope they don't go after the kids next.nonono Just say'n!!

Gotta add that fishing during the week is the biggest thing I look forward too when and if I get to retire!!??!!:crazy:

very weell put kingfish to me it is not the money it is the point figured the new income would account for bout .3 % of the buget lets do away with the lifetime lic. and get another dab that sounds like we are really doin something????

This is the first time I've commented on this issue and now I won't have to since this post covers my sentiments exactly on this issue. Good and well reasoned post there crappieslinger.Thumbs Up

Taking more from the tax payers aint the "fix".:(

I've never been to any store that said if I purchased from them I would have it free at 65. Since 1970 each generation has paid for the retired generation. What we have here is the biggest jump in license fees and in hopes of keeping those future anglers our gov't has reneged on it's promise for seniors. This would've entailed a 50% increase in annual fees to compensate for the difference. My view on this is "how many STOP AHEAD signs do you need for a STOP sign?" We knew it was coming. It's not an entitlement, where do you get that? This has been stated for over 40 yrs. Next thing is my lifetime license, that's when I have to buy another now at age 65. I already anted up, and so have our seniors.
