Will it hurt to run Amsoil Synthetic TCW3 in an older (1976) motor?
There's some questions as to the compatibility of Amsoil and pressurized direct injection in todays 2strokes, I doub't you'd have any problems in an old mixer like yours. I've been running synthetics and syn blends in my high perf Mercs since I bought my first (225 ProMax SS) back in 1999. Syn oil is considerably cleaner and that is THE biggest reason they are good for 2strokes. All oils (both dino oil, blends and full syn) marked TCW-3 or higher are considerably cleaner than oils of old. Carbon build up is the biggest killer of 2stroke engines. You get carbon built up under the rings, they push the rings out, that ring hangs in a intake/exhaust port and KABLOOEY the engine goes graveyard on ya.
I'd mix 3oz per gallon and letter roll, oil is cheaper than rebuilds or new motors!

I use it in my 2001 Mercury 90HP & it is cleaner burning. IMO
Synthetic oil won't hurt your motor but you may be wasting the money as your old oil may have already stuck the rings, so if I was going to switch I would first use a chemical like engine tuner (omc) or power tune (merc) to help break up any carbon build up on the ring lands and rings.
Thanks for the replies..
Hey Don .... if you use Deep Creep or Sea Foam to clean that motor out (before switching over to synthetic oil), then you'd best do it over at Blackie's house :yikes As I understand it, once it's done its job & you fire the motor back up, you're looking at a black sludge mess under the motor & enough smoke to bring the Fire Depts from all neighboring counties Rofl And you KNOW you don't want to make any such mess on Doris' driveway or yard  (divorce would be the LEAST of your troubles !! )
... cp
