I can't help but think that contraption would only work on boats that are used at idle/below planing speeds. Once on plane, most hulls require a bit of negative or postive trim to work most effeciently. That setup has to be PERFECTLY straight going through the water or it's going to cause ALOT of drag and will also cause turbulance in the water before the prop can get a grip on that water.
Cut the bottom out of a coffee can, then hold it under water in your boat while running 30-40 down the lake. Now unless you hold it PEFECTLY squared to the direction of travel I doubt you'll be able to hold onto. Now imagine the amount of drag created by something as large as that "thingymabob".
This is what I used for a while on my 9.9 Johnson. I cut the fins off and it worked well. It did seem to slow me down a bit. I liked it because you didn't have to drill any holes in the motor.
