Preventing rust on raw spoon blanks

I got a bunch of raw steel spoon blanks and stupid me didn't think about them rusting. It is superficial right now thankfully and easily cleaned but I need to clean them and then prevent them from rusting further until I get the all powder painted. What is the best way to do this:

Store them with some WD40 on them and then clean before PP?
Store in some other oil product and do the same?
Any other suggestions?

Also, what would be the best way to remove some of the edge on them? Doesn't matter much for trout and pan fish sizes but for steelhead I will be bouncing the rocks a lot and sharp edges will chip paint fast hitting the rocks a lot. I would use Vinyl but most of the colors I want simply are not available in vinyl.

if you have a bathroom with a vent you can keep them in there, you can just sort of stop them cause the vents in a bathroom will stop them from gathering moisture

If you have clear powder paint - clean all the spoons up then clear coat them. You can always heat them up and powder them again later and the clear would keep them from rusting.

I thought about cleaning them with WD40 and not washing them off until I am ready to paint them. Would that work or will the WD40 leave a scent residue after being stored in it?

WD 40 I believe has a tint bit of water in it so not sure that would be good. If you had not got them rusty yet I would just say keep them inside in the AC, but I wouldn't put them in the bathroom since people shower and bath in there as well as the toilets. Just keep them in a cool dry place in the AC. If you were going to oil them I would use better oil, but not sure how easy that will come off unless you use carbon tetrachloride to take the oil off and it will. In military school they has us take out guns down and us that to take all the old oil off and then put a new light coat on.

I was just gonna wash with soap and water and then dry them before painting them. Have heard that about WD40 having water but only as a suffocant or something like that. Who knows. I have the blanks all bundled up in a bag with dessicant so hopefully that will stop any further rust until I get a coat of paint on them.

I would suggest a poly bag w one of those silicone packs added. I don't know where you would buy them but my wife gets enough packages in the mail with those little silcone packs added that I would have a lifetime supply...
