I have a 2003 75hp. 2stroke Merc. My ?is by the water pump they tell you to put a bead of silicone before you put lower unit back up. What exactly does this seal and how critical is the seal?

What they are talking about is behind the water pump housing toward the prop there is a flat area that requiers a bead of silicone across it ( there may be some there already and it's usually red or orange) this seals exhaust gas from blowing back into the area around the water pump causing it to get hot and possibly air into the cooling water which is not good. I would put a small amount across the edge thats maybe 2 inches across to make sure the motor gets proper cooling.
