I spliced the red, black, and bare wires together and isolated them from each other. No ticking at transducer and blank screen with 300 feet plus readouts. Also noticed interference everytime the trolling motor was turned on.

Did you solder the foil shield?
No, we did not. I was wondering if that was necessary also.

Not soldering the foil shield will not keep the transducer from working as there should already be a positive and ground wire for the transducer. My guess is that there is internal damage to the unit. You can try connecting your unit to another transducer to see if it will work or not.
does anyone have any "before" pictures of a damaged TD wire that shows the "insides" of the overall wire.
