I have both a 798 and a 597 units in my boat, I was hoping someone could give me some hints and answers to help me be able to both track my jig in the water as well as be able to distinguish and find the thermocline on the display... Thanks

don't know the specifics but switchfire max mode is the first place to start (2d of course)
Yea I have tried using switch fire but it ends up putting so much on the screen it makes it impossible to read anything
not sure but sensitivity settings may help--definetly no expert- trying to fine tune my DI settings-but I saw it on the bbc boards and use it myself. also playing with the sonar beams may help too--not sure which one 200 or 83. but you will have a bunch of clutter on your screen--but will see your jig and even a fish come up and hit it (or at least take a look at it:) good luck.

Here is a picture of a thermocline, the green line just below 20 feet. This was taken in clear mode, not max mode, at Mark Twain lake.
Switchfire Max mode and Switchfire Clear mode take different sensitivity settings...
I use Switchfire Max mode in deeper than 10ft of water and then turn the sensitivity down to an acceptable clutter level...
I use Switchfire Clear mode in less than 10ft of water and then turn the sensitivity up to an acceptable clutter level..
Use the Sonar sensitivity setting in conjunction with the Switchfire setting to achieve the best results in the 2d sonar views...

Also adjust your surface clutter setting.if your trying to see your jig up near the surface sometimes surface clutter will keep you from seeing your jig.you have 200khz and455 khz you will be able to see your jig on both but the 200 has a wider cone angle.you can also see yoyr jig on di but di has very narrow beam with.
I only have 200 and 83khz settings. I have found where I can adjust the 83 but I haven't seen a 200 setting...
yes your right. i thought that you have the 597hd/di. oops.
I am also wanting to learn how to do this.
