What weight oil goes in the lower unit, is it simply "Gear Oil"? What brand do you guys use? I work a good bit with Harleys and I've always used Mobile 1 oil in the motor and Mobile 1 Gear Oil in the tranny, can you do the same with an Outboard? Thanks in advance guys.

It is Marine grade gear oil, not simple gear oil. Stop by a local boat dealer or marina and they'll have it for ya.

probabley any 80 90 weight would work . the old eletric shift used 10 weight and it had same gears but shifted like a automatic . some standard shifts like a ford ranger and a honda my daughter had both standard shift used automatic fluid .
Just any 80 - 90 weight oil will not work very well, the marine grade gear oil has protection additives to keep the gears protected even with some water intrusion, plus it stands up to the stress of turning 5000 rpm's under an extreme load, where as rear end oil it a car or truck make see half those rpm's and will roll with little resistance on the hwy. Do yourself a favor , bite the bulit, spend the money and get the good stuff. Like the old GM comercial on tv "You can pay now or pay later"
I use pennzoil marine gear oil I believe it's 80 or 90 weight GL5 rated...
I found out the hard way that regular rear end lube will foam and build pressure, causing leaking seals. the marine stuff is made not to foam or build pressure
I think most newer lower units use a hypoid gear system, so I would use an outboard marine grade lube. Yamaha recommends a hypoid gear lube, GL-5 rated oils I think meets that requirement, at least thats what I use in my Yamaha ProV 150...
