Hey everyone I am trying to learn how to use my side imaging on my hb798 and I am curious to know everyone's settings in the side imaging display.... I know I am on stuff but I can never see anything on my unit. I know I new to adjust the settings but I still need help on where to go
I keep my SI Range set to 60-70 ft left AND right.. (unless I want to discern a piece of structure.. I may set to left OR right.. This, in effect zooms that side's image)...
I keep the "SI Enhance" window up on my screen anytime I am viewing SI...
This gives the abilitiy to change "SI Sensitivity" setting without (opaquing out) any other split view that I have up at the time...
I use the SI Sensitivity setting as a "brightness" control for my SI image (as different water conditions/bottom compositions will make the image brighter/darker..)
SI Sensitivity up will brighten the image...
SI Sensitivity down will darken the image...
I frequently change this SI Sensitivity setting as my SI image changes in brightness...
Here is a screenshot of the "SI Enhance" window overlayed onto the SI image... I had to adjust the sensitivity to 19 to get this mud bottom to reflect enough sonar echo to get an acceptable image...

I set the contrast to 10-12...
I set the sharpness to off..(raising the sharpness will make the fish "pop out" on the screen but makes the image grainy..)
I set the chart speed to match boat speed...1mph=1 chart setting, 2mph = 2 chart setting, etc...

You might consider buying the HDSI xducer to use with your 798....

Some say the 455kHz frequency in this xducer gives better images than the stock compact SI xducer that comes with the 798..(you will not be able to use the 800kHz frequency in the HDSI xducer because the 798 does not have circuitry to read the 800kHz data...)

Ricky, in your pictures from the first post I can see how the brush pile looks in your 2d and in your down imaging but I couldn't see it in the side imaging, where actually is it located?

I was directly over the brush.. So the brushpile actually shows as the "Bump" in the left and right water column...
This is an "un-talked-about" image size phenomenon in SI discussions...
Structure image ratio size ...SI vs 2d
In my 1197:
A brushpile that shows as the size of a golfball on the 2d screen...shows as the size of a quarter in the SI image...
Structure images are roughly 1/4 size in SI as to what you are used to seeing in 2d...And if you "split" the screen... Structure images are smaller still...
This is why it is stressed to buy the biggest screen one can afford...structure in SI images are very small compared to the same structure in 2d or DI...
It's part of the SI image interpretation learning curve to realize how big (actually how small) structure actually looks in an SI image...
I think this is one of the most difficult aspects to learn in SI image interpretation...
One would see the brushpile in 2d or DI and then expect to see that same ratio sized brushpile in SI ...
Not so...the same brushpile in SI is 1/4 the size....(at a Normal SI Range setting of 60-70ft left and right)..
There are 2 ways to make the brushpile image physically bigger in the SI image..
1. Lower the SI Range setting...(less bottom coverage = more pixels per square foot of lake bottom)
2. Set SI side setting to 1 side only...(same reason as above)..
It takes practice to train one's eyes to recognize the image size ratio difference of structure in SI vs 2d or DI... But once it clicks in your head...(1/4 size in SI)... Brushpiles will "jump" out on the SI image for you..

Did anyone even notice the pallet in the lower right of the SI image...??
Pretty small huh...??
And that's on 10.4 inch screen...!!
Remember...structure in SI is roughly 1/4 size of what you think it should show up as...

Thanks for the help. I spent a hour or so on the lake today piddling around tryin to get it to work and I couldn't find or see anything
