Water in lower unit

Pulled the drain plugs today to change the fluid in the lower unit. Came out very milky. Last summer i did have some discoloration, I put new seals for the drain plugs in, also changed the water pump. I changed the fluid after a couple trips after changing the impeller, just to make sure i put it back together correctly. No problems. Thought i had it fixed. Did i do something wrong? Something new going on? It is on a '95 merc 25 hp, serial #og157655.

Sounds like you need new lower unit seals.

Yep i bet it is the seal behind the prop. I just had to replace mine on a 25 hp mariner. Someone had cut fishing line off and left it in the lake and i found it wrapped around my prop shaft. It was too late it had already ruined the seal.

I called two local shops, $78 for a kit with all the seals for the lower unit. They want any where from $80-$95 an hour for labor. At 1 1/2 - 3 hrs of labor, i'll tackle it myself.Might as well do all of them while I have it apart.
Shawn, Im surprised we don't have more probs with Fishing line. I mow the dam of our lake, constantly pulling line out of the weed eater & mower.

You will need a tool to remove the prop shaft carrier, the thing that has the 2 seals in it because there is a large o-ring behind it that leaks as much as prop shaft seals, thats why dealers charge, gotta by thousands in special tools from the manufactor weather you want to or not, part of the dealer agreement. That tool is important because the carrier is threaded in and needs to be torqued to the proper specs of a leak can develop or worse a gear failure because of to much to little gear mesh in the lower unit.
